The dark grey-brown trunk is sometimes slightly orange tinged and can peel off in strips at a later age. The leaf is somewhat variable but almost always has three lobes more or less directed forwards. This has given A. buergerianum the name Trident Maple. The shiny dark green leaves have a healthy appearance and can turn yellowish to deep orange-red in autumn.
In addition, it is valuable for bees (honey plant).
